Rare manzanita native to the California chaparral and tolerating a range of well-draining soils from serpentine to clay. To 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide with deep mahogany stems, fuzzy gray leaves, and small white to pink flowers winter into spring. Edible, apple-green and red berries follow. Hardy to 10° F. USDA zone 8.
